Take Back Control of AHS

Management is still attempting to rewrite our entire contract, handing us hundreds of pages of changes, and then doesn’t want to give us enough time to make decisions democratically about how to respond in a way that best represents our members. They still want to make us pay more for health care, give management sole control over what shifts are available, and cut holiday pay.
They want to take away our right to honor other union’s picket lines—a fundamental union right that union members have fought and died to defend for the last century—and they want to keep non-union AHS employees who want to join SEIU from joining.
We were able to make a little progress this week. We agreed to expand the protections against workplace discrimination, to prohibit management’s past practice of holding nurse licenses above our head as intimidation, and to ensure employees can have steward representation when being harassed at work, both found in Article 2. We also agreed on language in Article 3 updating the language on union dues deductions. AHS still refuses to respond to our wage proposal, saying they aren’t ready to talk about cost items even though their proposals cut holiday pay and increase health benefits, which all take money away from us. AHS management needs to go: please come tell the Board of Supervisors to take back control over AHS.
